Project Esperanza provides paid employment for a rolling average of 20 locals in the Puerto Plata community, mainly Haitian immigrants who have little other opportunity for work. We are an organization that has been built on 100% volunteerism and true self sacrifice from everyone involved. Therefore, we are very hesitant to provide paid positions to those from countries where work and money is much more readily available. However, we have recently begun incorporating a few paid positions for expats for roles that generate an income themselves in order to further encourage and enable the consistent and valuable participation of expats. The following positions are currently available:
English Immersion Pre-School Teacher
Teach pre-school to native Spanish and Haitian Creole speakers in English.
Time committment: We plan on breaking this position up into two teachers per year as life is much different here and we see that 6 months is a challenging length of time for expats to come and live in the community. This does not mean that one could potentially teach an entire school year, but this is done to ensure that we are prepared for teachers who decide to go home in the middle of the year. Therefore, the time committment is:
August to December OR January to June
Skills Needed: Proficiency/fluency in Spanish, teaching experience, experience working with small children, reliability, and creativity.
Compensation: A living stipend.
