Our Story
Project Esperanza: Our Inspiring Origin Story
Project Esperanza began in fall 2005 when two Virginia Tech students, deeply moved by previous volunteer trips to the Dominican Republic, felt a profound calling to return and create lasting positive change. They rallied a community of supporters, organizing fundraisers for a transformative summer 2006 trip to Puerto Plata.
That summer, 31 dedicated volunteers uncovered a critical need through a street census: hundreds of young Haitian boys, many as young as six, were working to support families back home, often without access to schooling in the Dominican Republic. This revelation sparked our first vital program: daily lunch, school lessons, and activities at the volunteers’ house, forging genuine relationships and providing hope.

Following this pivotal summer, Project Esperanza took root. We secured a house in Puerto Plata for volunteers and formally incorporated as a non-profit. Our commitment was soon tested when the house was stripped bare, but our community quickly rallied to restock it, demonstrating our unwavering resolve.
Our work expanded rapidly:
A Commitment to Education: We partnered with a local church in Padre Granero, supporting their fledgling school that bravely addressed the educational barriers faced by Haitian children. We provided teacher salaries, materials, and support, marking the beginning of our grassroots schools program.
A Commitment to Social Aid: In January 2007, volunteers expanded our daily lunch and tutoring program for street-working boys, offering flexible learning opportunities and a ‘points and rewards’ system for necessities. This evolved into our Boys’ Home, providing a safe haven and comprehensive care.
From these foundational steps, Project Esperanza quickly grew and adapted. We’ve continually strived to meet pressing community needs, engaging a diverse network of individuals. Today, our efforts have significantly expanded beyond education and social work into crucial community development, ensuring sustainable impact.
