Community Support & Social Aid

Providing holistic assistance to address the community’s most pressing needs.

At Project Esperanza, our commitment to the Haitian immigrant and refugee families in Puerto Plata extends far beyond the classroom. Thanks to the unwavering support of our sponsors, we’re able to provide holistic assistance that addresses their most pressing challenges. While free education is a foundational gift, we’ve observed profound gratitude when we can offer support in critical areas such as medical care, food distributions, and housing. While we don’t do it every month, certain aid, such as offering assistance with rent during a parent’s accident or contributing to necessary surgery or medical costs has significantly built trust and fostered positive attitudes amongst our parents and families.

Since 2006, Project Esperanza has operated a residential program that offers a safe haven for Haitian refugee boys who arrive in the Dominican Republic seeking new lives and finding themselves surviving as street vendors, shoe shiners, or servants. This highly vulnerable population faces significant challenges including language barriers, cultural differences, and discrimination.

Our program has expanded over the years to also welcome orphaned or abandoned children, both girls and boys, from the two communities where our elementary schools are located. For all children in our care, we provide comprehensive support, including housing, food, clothing, medical care, and education, ensuring they find the stability and opportunity they deserve. After about two decades, those who have graduated from the home or are currently in it all consider themselves family, together with our biological kids. Many of the young men now have their own wives and children.

In 2006, Project Esperanza first formed a soccer team for the boys in our day program who were working, and often living, on the streets. The boys proudly named their team Supesta and began organizing games at the local field. With donated jerseys and cleats, the team soon started traveling for away games.

As our schools formalized, the team evolved into a beloved extracurricular activity for our students. Supesta participated in various tournaments, fostering teamwork and providing a vital outlet, until activities were paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Supesta dissolved, we now have an excellent volunteer PE teacher, Justin, who spends his afternoon off from work each week to train our students

Project Esperanza reopened our second-hand shop in the Batey of Muñoz (Fall 2024). Operating as a thrift store, it circulates donated items at affordable prices while simultaneously creating vital work opportunities for community members. We envision a future where residents can earn points for positive behaviors, like recycling, to use at the shop. This sustainable initiative, especially crucial given immigration control challenges that limit access to goods, thrives on ongoing promotion and your generous donations of clothes, shoes, accessories, toys, household items, or electronics – whether dropped off locally or shipped from abroad. If you’d like to help, please email Info@EsperanzaMeansHope.org.

In the Batey of Muñoz, land is limited and there is no sewage system. After surrounding land was sold in 2023, community members, having less access to surrounding fields, began jumping over school walls to use the bathroom. This led us to construct community toilets, thanks to the fundraising of a group of volunteers in the community.

Project Esperanza is committed to fostering environmental sustainability and community well-being through collaborative construction projects and educational initiatives. Working hand-in-hand with our international volunteers, we create impactful, sustainable solutions that benefit both the community and the environment.

Together with Morehouse College volunteers, we have constructed eco-compost toilets, a sustainable method that transforms human waste into valuable fertilizer. Beyond construction, we are dedicated to raising environmental awareness through education. We occasionally provide workshops for students and community members, teaching recycling principles and demonstrating how to transform discarded materials into useful and beautiful items, such as jewelry. Our efforts also extend to active bottle collection for recycling.

We are proud to share our progress and advancements in environmental sustainability through our dedicated Facebook group, Recycle for Puerto Plata, inviting everyone to join us in building a greener future.

Project Esperanza is dedicated to empowering vulnerable youth by providing vocational training in a variety of crafts and art production methods. Through learning skills such as leatherwork, bracelet making, sea glass jewelry, and even creating charming sock monkeys, we equip young individuals with the tools to earn money in a safe, respectable, and independent way.

These programs are not just about learning a craft; they are about fostering self-sufficiency and dignity. To support these talented artisans and ensure fair compensation for their work, Project Esperanza operates a shop at one of the schools, dedicated to selling their beautiful fair trade art. This initiative creates sustainable pathways for youth to thrive, celebrating their creativity while building a brighter future.
